Anish Kapoor in Berlin @ Martin-Gropius-Bau (Berlin)

On this Saturday begins, as part of the Berliner Festspiele, Anish Kapoor‘s exhibition at Martin-Gropius-Bau Museum of Berlin. The event will bring together 70 pieces of the British sculptor. Works made between 1988 and now. Anish Kapoor will incidentally present on that occasion a new composition inspired by the lithographies of the Russian constructivist El Lissitzky. Since his beginnings, Anish Kapoor always blurred the borders between painting, sculpture, installations and even architecture. Working from any kind of material, he developed an artistic language that uses abstraction and sets of perspectives to build powerful metaphors. Each image created so highlights dualities such as chaos and perfection or still deepness and immediacy. The exhibition, which will run until November 24th, will allow to comprehend this unique and unlimited approach. More information on the website of the Festival.

Norwegian born in 1977, Rune Guneriussen proposes pieces half-way between photography and land-art. Indeed, his work consists in creating installations from everyday life objects he sets into natural and virgin environments. Once the staging over, he photographs the result and then dismounts the whole leaving no other physical trace of his intervention than the pictures. These images, through their interaction, constitute visual poems praising the possibles where any fantasy can turn real for a while or a dream.

Céline Nieszawer – Lost Control @ NextLevel Galerie (Paris)

Known foremost for her cinematographic and photographic work, Céline Nieszawer currently, and until June 22nd, exhibits her drawings on paper at Paris NextLevel Galerie. The event so brings together, under the title “Lost Control”, pieces essentially made with a pen. Together, the works depict a strange, burlesque, even fetishist, world where walk orphan members and wandering breasts kept by some links or bits of ropes. A universe the artist wants uncertain and unbridled from the usual constraints but that rebuilds itself over the course of spontaneous meetings between heteroclite forms.

Jazz, New York in the Roaring Twenties (Book)

Robert Nippoldt and Hans-Jürgen Schaal joined forces and paid tribute to New York’s jazz scene of the 1920′s. The two men so brought together, in a 144 pages book, illustrations, texts and anecdotes that render the creative effervescence of the city at that golden time. The book presents about twenty mythic places and figures, such as the Roseland Ballroom, the Cotton Club or Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington and Bessy Smith, to relate the crazy nights of musical battles as the legendary recording sessions. A CD compiling the standards of that decade also backs this book edited by Taschen and entitled “Jazz, New York in the Roaring Twenties”. You can incidentally buy it on Amazon.

French political cartoonist born in 1980, Aurel works for several medias such as Le Monde, Politis and Yahoo! actualités. His style is characterized by sharp and precise lines backing an unlimited sense of humor. No taboo, no aggression. Only the will to play down allowing oneself to laugh. Paris celebrates Keith Haring. About 23 years after the death of the American street artist, the French capital’s Museum of Modern Art and the cultural center CENTQUATRE jointly exhibit more than 250 works. The event is one of the biggest retrospectives ever dedicated to this icon of Pop Art and the 80′s. Entitled “The Political Line”, it allows to comprehend his world as the political and social dimension of his artwork. As, for his all career, Keith Haring dealt with societies issues such as injustice, homophobia, racism or AIDS. Themes expressed associating universal patterns and symbols. The Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain currently presents nine Ron Mueck‘s sculptures, three of which specially made for that occasion. The event allows to appreciate the work of the British artist who, despite his fame, rarely exhibits his creations. Ron Mueck’s world is foremost characterized by an exacerbated realism. But, notwithstanding that dimension, the scale sets and the mise-en-scene invite the viewer to slide from contemplation to interpretation and maybe dream. The exhibition corresponds to Ron Mueck’s 20 years of career and the Fondation Cartier logically decided to edit a catalogue covering his journey. Lastly, an original film directed by Gautier Deblonde reveals the creative process of the sculptor following step by step the designing of the three pieces made specially for this exhibition which will run until September 29th. Hendrik Beikirch (ECB) – Transsib – Greyhound @ Ruttkowski 68 Gallery

The German gallery Ruttkowski68 (Cologne) currently, and until May 19th, hosts an exhibition of Hendrik Beikirch, also known as ECB. The street artist presents, with the title “Transsib – Greyhound. Paintings from train and bus rides”, his last works. Enthusiast with large scale portraits, Hendrik ECB Beikirch drew for this series, as often, inspiration from the anonymous he meets during his walks and travels. The subjects of the running exhibition have so all been met in Russian Trans-Siberian Railway or in the busses of the American Greyhound. Two transports that, in countries that everything opposed for decades, are mainly used by the working classes. Discover here after some pictures from the event.

British street artist, Hutch strikes Brighton’s walls for more than 10 years. Turned master in stencil art, he develops his world on lots of medias, from bricks to paper, wood or human skin… His style is characterized with a hybridization of contemporary graffiti aesthetics and elements from pop culture, with a strong love for the erotism and the pin-ups of the 1950′s. He declares being influenced by artists form different disciplines. For example, Shepard Fairey, the Monthy Python or Bill Plympton. His pieces are exhibited all over the world and his prints can be bought directly on his eshop.

Etienne Gros – Les Fumées @ Galerie SpArtS (Paris)

From April 4th to 27th, Paris Galerie SpArtS will host an Etienne Gros exhibition. The French artist will present his series “Les Fumées”. This work, made as show its title from the smoke of candles or oil lamps, is a kind of off-balance to his acrylics. Indeed, Etienne Gros pursues his exploration of the morphology and its forms, but he gives up the large formats of canvasses to work on paper. Next to this, the roughness, the chromatic palettes and the thickness of his paintings are replaced by flat, monochrome and subtle figurations. The body is therefore suggested in its entirety even if the evanescence of the lines increases the abstract dimension of the sketches. The exhibition “Les Fumées” introduces the publication of a book bringing together the drawings of the eponymous series. More information on the website of the gallery.
