The beauty of an awful addiction by Frieke Janssens
The Brussels photographer Frieke Janssens likes to question, through the image, our conceptions and representations. As testifies her last series “La beauté d’une horrible addiction” (The beauty of an awful addiction) where are staged children from 4 years old to 9 smoking. No engagement, just the will to wonder about the childish relation we have with the cigarette.

A goal reached as the recourse to those models sparks off lots of reactions. “I thought using children as models, people would rather focus on the smoke and the cigarette. If I had chosen adults, it would have appeared banal.” To inform, Frieke Janssens used candles, incense and white pencils for the shooting she then replaced by cigarettes with Photoshop.
